How Breathing and the Pelvis Are Connected

Breathing is something we do every day, often without thinking about it.

When we think about breathing, we usually think about the lungs.

However, each breath also involves movement throughout the body, including the diaphragm, abdominal wall, and pelvic floor.

The pelvis is part of a larger system that is influenced by the way we breathe, move, and create stability.

Understanding these connections can offer a different perspective on how the body functions as a whole.

How Breathing Works

The diaphragm is the main muscle involved in breathing. It sits beneath the lungs and moves with each breath.

As we inhale, the diaphragm moves downward to allow the lungs to expand. As we exhale, it returns towards its resting position.

This movement also creates subtle changes in pressure and movement throughout the trunk, involving the ribs, abdominal wall, and deep core muscles.

Breathing is therefore not only about taking in air — it is also part of the body's natural movement system.

The Connection Between Breathing and the Pelvis

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles located at the base of the pelvis.

These muscles help support the pelvic organs and respond to changes in pressure during everyday movement and breathing.

The diaphragm and pelvic floor work together as part of this coordinated system.

During relaxed breathing, these areas respond to each other through subtle movements as we inhale and exhale.

This does not mean breathing alone determines pelvic health.

Rather, it is one example of how different areas of the body are connected and influence everyday movement.

Why This Matters

The body does not function as separate parts.

Breathing, posture, movement, and stability all work together to support how we move and adapt throughout daily life.

Understanding these connections allows us to appreciate the body as an integrated system, rather than focusing on one area alone.

At The Core Wellness Clinic, we take a personalised, whole-body approach to women's health.
